Surigao del Sur, Province in Caraga region, Philippines
Surigao del Sur is a province along the northeastern coast of Mindanao, covering 4,932 square kilometers (1,905 square miles) of mountain terrain, rivers, coastal zones, and farmland. The territory extends from Pacific shoreline strips to forested elevations inland.
The Philippine government created this province on June 19, 1960, when it separated from its northern counterpart through Republic Act 2786. This division formed two independent administrative units from a shared geographic and cultural heritage.
The province carries in its name the Spanish words "del Sur," meaning southern, a linguistic trace of centuries under colonial administration. This naming pattern continues in daily conversation and official documents throughout the territory.
Travelers reach the area through Tandag Airport or the Pan-Philippine Highway, with local transport between municipalities by bus or passenger van. Roads inland can wind through hills, so plan extra time for journeys into mountain zones.
The Hinatuan Enchanted River flows through this territory with water so clear that fish swimming at 24 meters (80 feet) deep remain visible from the surface. This extraordinary transparency has inspired local legends and draws swimmers who wade into the turquoise pool.
