Camotes Islands, Island group in Cebu, Philippines
The Camotes Islands are a group of four main islands located east of Cebu: Pacijan, Ponson, Poro, and Tulang, positioned in the Camotes Sea. The islands feature rolling terrain, coastal areas, and multiple small settlements spread across them.
Early archaeological work uncovered artifacts that revealed ancient settlements had existed on these islands before modern times. These early discoveries helped scholars understand how people first came to live in this region.
The local language here is Porohanon, a dialect spoken on Poro Island that sounds quite different from standard Cebuano and reflects the islands' separate identity. Fewer people speak it in daily life today, making it an important part of local heritage.
To reach the islands, ferries run from Cebu City to several ports including Poro, Consuelo, Pilar, and Jagutapay. The journey across the water is usually smooth, and arriving early in the day gives you more time to explore the islands.
A large freshwater lake called Lake Danao sits on Pacijan Island, surrounded by rolling hills and natural vegetation. This inland body of water is a surprising feature on islands otherwise surrounded by ocean.
