Mount Arayat, Extinct volcano in Pampanga, Philippines
Mount Arayat rises 1,033 meters above Central Luzon's agricultural plains, featuring a breached crater on its northwestern side and a smaller andesitic dome.
The mountain served as a strategic retreat for Filipino revolutionaries following the Cry of Nueva Ecija against Spanish forces in September 1896.
Local folklore identifies Mount Arayat as the dwelling place of Maria Sinukuan, a supernatural being known in Kapampangan mythology as a mountain spirit.
Two distinct hiking trails access the mountain peaks, with the southern route starting from Arayat town and the northern path beginning at Pampanga State Agricultural University.
The volcano stands as an isolated mountain formation in the middle of Central Luzon's flat terrain, making it visible from distances up to 75 kilometers.
