Magalang Church, Catholic parish church in Magalang, Philippines.
The Magalang Church, also known as the San Bartolome Parish Church, is a Catholic parish church in Barangay San Nicolas I in Magalang, in the Philippines. It is built in the baroque style with three interior aisles and a two-story bell tower made of stone masonry.
Work on the church started around 1725, and Father Ramon Sarrionandia played a key role in advancing the construction in the latter part of the 1700s. The facade was only completed in 1875 under Father Baltasar Gamarra, meaning the project spanned nearly 150 years.
The church is dedicated to Saint Bartholomew, the patron of the town, and his image appears on the interior decorations and on the main altar. Religious feasts draw many people from the surrounding area, and the church remains a gathering point for the local community throughout the year.
The church sits in Barangay San Nicolas I and is easy to reach on foot from the center of Magalang. If you visit during a service, wear modest clothing and avoid disturbing the ongoing ceremony.
The two large bells in the tower were installed in 1889 and 1890 and are still in use today. Their sound carries far enough to be heard across most of the town, and locals have used them for generations to mark the time of day.
