University of San Carlos, Catholic private university in Cebu City, Philippines
The University of San Carlos is a Catholic private university in central Cebu City, Philippines, occupying five interconnected campuses that cover a total of 88 hectares (217 acres). The institution comprises eight colleges and twenty-seven departments offering academic and professional degree programs.
Spanish Jesuit missionaries founded the institution in 1595 as Colegio de San Ildefonso, introducing formal education to the Philippines. The order managed the college for more than three centuries until the institution gained its present name and university charter in 1948.
Catholic traditions shape daily life across the campuses through regular services and prayer spaces available to students and faculty throughout the week. International students from partner institutions bring their own customs and contribute to the global character of this educational community.
The campuses spread across different parts of downtown, so navigating the different locations requires some initial orientation. Most colleges concentrate on two main sites that remain accessible to visitors and students throughout the academic year.
The national higher education commission has designated eight programs as Centers of Excellence and twelve programs as Centers of Development. These distinctions mark specific departments as leading examples within the Philippine university system.
