Asilo de San Vicente de Paul, Catholic orphanage in Paco, Philippines
Asilo de San Vicente de Paul is an orphanage in Paco located along United Nations Avenue, situated on a roughly two-hectare property that houses the main facilities. The institution provides shelter and care for children who have been abandoned or lost their parents.
The orphanage was founded in 1885 by Sister Asunción Ventura, who used her family inheritance to purchase land for a shelter focused on girls. The facility faced severe damage during World War II from bombing but was reconstructed afterward.
The place became known for teaching embroidery and needlework to young residents, with handcrafted items finding buyers among wealthy families in the community. This craft tradition shaped daily life and gave girls practical skills they could use later.
The main entrance is at 1148 United Nations Avenue in Manila, where daily operations take place. Keep in mind this is an active care facility for children, so respectful behavior and consideration for the residents are important when visiting.
During World War II, the facility lost approximately 200 people in bombing attacks, which led to complete rebuilding after Manila's liberation. The reconstruction in February 1945 represented a total restart for the institution and its work.
