Lesser Poland

Lesser Poland is a historical region in southern Poland that stretches across six present-day voivodeships. The area includes different landscapes from the Vistula lowlands to the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains.

The area became the center of Polish statehood in the 10th century under Mieszko I. with Kraków as its main hub. During medieval times it encompassed the provinces of Kraków, Sandomierz, and Lublin.

The name Lesser Poland refers to the historical significance of the area as the heartland of early Polish rule. Visitors can still recognize this connection today in the street names and architecture of many towns.

The region is accessible through several major cities and offers a variety of landscapes to explore. The Vistula River runs through the area and serves as a natural orientation point in many parts.

The area holds important salt deposits near Wieliczka that were mined for centuries. The fertile soils along the Vistula have shaped agriculture in the region over a long period.
