Former Zittwerke in Porajów, Industrial organization in Porajów, Poland
The Former Zittwerke in Porajów is an industrial complex near the German-Polish border in Lower Silesia, made up of several large factory buildings. The site sits within the Bogatynia commune, in a small settlement right on the border with Germany.
The site originally served as military barracks before being converted in 1944 into a production facility for aircraft engines, run under the supervision of Junkers aircraft company. After the war, the area became part of Poland and the facility lost its original function.
The buildings from the wartime period still stand largely as they were built, offering a direct look at 1940s industrial architecture. Walking through the grounds, visitors can sense the scale of the former production halls and imagine the daily rhythm of workers who once filled them.
The grounds can be visited on foot during daylight, and sturdy footwear is a good idea given the uneven surfaces around the old buildings. Because the site sits right on the German border, it is worth paying attention to boundary markings during a visit.
Production at this facility was deliberately spread across several textile factories in the Zittau region as a way to hide what was actually being made there. This tactic was meant to mislead aerial reconnaissance and enemy intelligence services.
