Expressway S11, Expressway in central and northern Poland
The S11 is an expressway running through four Polish regions, connecting the Baltic coast in the north to Upper Silesian industrial areas in the south. The route spans approximately 580 kilometers and passes through West Pomeranian, Greater Poland, Opole, and Silesian voivodeships.
Construction started in the early 2000s following Poland's membership in the European Union as part of a nationwide infrastructure upgrade. The project progressed in phases, with different road sections opening to traffic at different times over the following years.
The expressway links regions with distinct local traditions and ways of life across Poland. Travelers passing through notice how the surroundings change from coastal areas to industrial zones with different architectural styles along the route.
Currently more than 120 kilometers are open to traffic, with many sections serving as bypasses around cities to reduce congestion in urban areas. Travelers should be aware that ongoing construction in various sections may affect traffic conditions.
The route intersects with five other major Polish expressways, creating an important hub within the national road network. These connections make it easy for drivers to switch between northern and southern routes or access other main highways.
