Salwator Cemetery

Salwator Cemetery is a Latin Rite Catholic burial ground in the Zwierzyniec district, situated on hilly terrain with paved paths winding between graves. The headstones are mostly made of granite and stone, many decorated with religious symbols and inscriptions bearing the names of the deceased.

The cemetery was established in 1865 as a parish burial ground and grew alongside Kraków as the city expanded. It was enlarged to meet the needs of the growing population and continues serving that purpose today.

The cemetery takes its name from Saint Salvator and reflects how Kraków honors the memory of its deceased residents through this sacred space. Walking the paths, you notice graves ranging from simple crosses to elaborate family monuments, each telling a different story about the people buried here.

You can reach the cemetery most easily by tram line 1 from Kraków's Old Town to its final stop. From there, you'll walk uphill for a short distance, so wear comfortable shoes and allow extra time for the climb.

From the hillside cemetery, you get sweeping views over the city and the surrounding mountains, especially on clear days. This vantage point creates a moment where history and nature come together.
