Grodno Castle, Gothic castle in Zagórze Śląskie, Poland.
Grodno Castle is a stone fortress located at about 450 meters elevation on Choina Mountain, with views over the Bystrzyca River valley. The structure displays characteristic Gothic features, including thick defensive walls and the typical layout of a medieval fortification from that period.
The fortress was built in 1193 by Duke Bolesław I the Tall as part of a defense system between the Duchy of Jawor and the Kingdom of Bohemia. It served as an important outpost in a region that was frequently contested between different powers.
The fortress serves as a place where medieval practices come alive through events and demonstrations that visitors can watch and experience. Local groups recreate old crafts and daily activities to show how people once lived within these walls.
The site is accessible year-round for visits, with extended hours during the warmer months. Audio guides in several languages help visitors explore the history of the fortress at their own pace.
The underground level still contains a medieval torture chamber that shows what deterrent measures were used in such fortresses. Among the objects on display is a historical connection to a Silesian princess.
