Torpedownia, German torpedo testing ruins in Babie Doły, Poland
Torpedownia is a ruin of a German torpedo facility in Babie Doły on the Baltic coast near Gdynia in Poland. The concrete remains rise from the water about 300 meters (roughly 985 feet) from the shore and are reached by a wooden walkway.
German forces built the complex during the Second World War after their Eckernförde site came within reach of British bombers. The Baltic coast provided a more sheltered location for testing torpedoes until the end of the war.
Locals refer to the site by its Polish name meaning torpedo station, keeping alive the memory of its military purpose. Film crews return here regularly to use the concrete shapes as a backdrop for war dramas and crime shows set along the coast.
A parking area near the Naval Aviation Brigade in Gdynia provides access to the coastal path leading to the site on foot. The wooden walkway and concrete remains are easier to explore in calm weather conditions.
An underwater corridor ran along the seabed to track the flight paths of torpedoes during test runs. This system allowed engineers to observe and record the movements with precision.
