Orzesze, city and urban gmina of Poland
Orzesze is an urban municipality in Mikołów County, in the Silesia region of southern Poland. The town features a mix of older residential buildings and newer construction, set across a gently rolling landscape typical of this part of Upper Silesia.
The settlement was first documented in the medieval period, when it was a small village surrounded by forests and farmland. Coal mining, which grew significantly during the 19th century, reshaped the town and drew workers from across the region.
The name Orzesze comes from the Polish word for hazelnuts or oak trees, pointing to the forested land that once covered the area. Locals still use the green corners of the town for everyday walks, and this connection to nature remains a visible part of town life.
The town center can be covered on foot without much effort, and local buses link the different neighborhoods. Comfortable shoes are useful, especially when visiting former industrial areas and green spaces on the outskirts that may have uneven paths.
Orzesze is made up of several districts that were once separate villages, each retaining its own character and layout. Walking between them, visitors notice clear differences in the style of buildings and the feel of the streets from one area to the next.
