Market Square in Gliwice, Pedestrian square in Gliwice, Poland

The Market Square in Gliwice, also called Rynek, is a pedestrian square in the center of the city, lined with old tenement buildings and a town hall dating from the late 18th century. At its center stands a Neptune fountain, and the ground floor of the surrounding buildings features arcaded walkways with shops and cafes.

The square has been the center of Gliwice since medieval times, when the city was first laid out on a grid plan. Over the following centuries the buildings around it were gradually replaced, leaving the town hall from the late 18th century as one of its main landmarks today.

The square, known locally as Rynek, is where people in Gliwice come to meet, eat, and spend time outdoors. The cafes and restaurants lining the arcade buildings give the place a relaxed, social feel throughout the day.

The square is entirely pedestrian and easy to reach on foot from other parts of the old town. It works well as a starting point for exploring the surrounding streets, since several other sites are within easy walking distance.

Archaeologists working beneath the square found old wells that point to settlement here going back further than the medieval town plan. The town hall basement also preserves the remains of an older hall from the 13th century, which visitors can see.
