The village appears in records from 1193 and received town privileges in 1279 from a Kraków prince. This early recognition shaped its development as a significant local center.
The village became an ecclesiastical center in 1212 when it hosted a council of Polish bishops, including the attendance of Wincenty Kadłubek.
