Gmina Czarny Dunajec, Urban-rural municipality in Nowy Targ County, Poland.
Gmina Czarny Dunajec is an urban-rural municipality in Nowy Targ County, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, in southern Poland. It covers several villages alongside a small town center, set among farmland and meadows near the foothills of the Tatra Mountains.
The municipality took its current form during the Polish administrative reforms of the 20th century, which grouped the area's villages and small town into a single urban-rural unit. Before that, the villages of the area had passed through various administrative structures since the period of the partitions of Poland.
The area sits within the Podhale region, known for its own folk art, wooden architecture, and highland herding traditions. Walking through the villages, visitors can spot decorated wooden houses and occasionally find craftspeople making traditional regional goods.
The municipality is easy to reach via the road links connecting Nowy Targ to the surrounding villages, and it works well as a base for heading toward the Tatra Mountains. Starting from the main villages is a good idea, as that is where basic services and onward connections are concentrated.
Beneath the surface of the municipality's land lies one of Poland's larger peat bog areas, the Baligówka peatland, which most travelers passing through never notice. This bog is a protected nature reserve and a rare type of ecosystem in this part of the country.
