Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes in Darłowo, Gothic castle in Darłowo, Poland
The Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes in Darłowo is a Gothic castle located in the center of the town, close to the Wieprza River. It has a compact rectangular layout with a tall corner tower, surrounding walls, and several wings that once held residential and storage functions.
The castle was begun under Duke Boguslaw V in the 14th century and grew into the main seat of the Pomeranian Griffins dynasty over the following generations. After the dynasty died out in the 17th century, the building passed through different hands and fell into disrepair before being restored.
The castle holds collections tied to the Pomeranian dukes, and visitors can explore rooms that once served as living quarters and ceremonial halls. The connection to Erik of Pomerania, who was king of three Scandinavian kingdoms and spent his final years here, gives the place a particular weight that goes beyond local history.
The castle sits in the heart of Darłowo and is easy to reach on foot from the main square. Inside, there is a museum with permanent displays, and a visit to the grounds pairs well with a walk through the surrounding old town streets.
Erik of Pomerania, who died in this castle, had once ruled Denmark, Norway, and Sweden at the same time, making him one of the most powerful rulers in northern Europe of his era. He ended his life here in a small coastal town, far from the courts he had once governed.
