Darłowo Lighthouse, Maritime navigation tower in Darłowo, Poland
Darłowo Lighthouse is a white square tower with a balcony and lantern room that rises 21 meters above the eastern breakwater at the port entrance. The structure marks the harbor opening and serves as a visual guide for vessels navigating the Wieprz river mouth.
The first navigation structure appeared in 1715 when the city council placed lights on both sides of the Wieprz river mouth to guide ships into port. The current lighthouse was constructed later as the need for more reliable guidance grew with maritime traffic.
The lighthouse represents the maritime bond between this coastal town and the sea, serving as a landmark that generations of local fishers and sailors have relied upon. It stands as a symbol of the community's dependence on the port and maritime traditions.
Access to the lighthouse is via the Wieprz drawbridge, which crosses the river and leads onto the breakwater where the tower stands. Visitors can climb to the observation platform to take in views of the Baltic Sea and harbor.
The lighthouse produces a distinctive signal of two white flashes every 15 seconds, visible up to 30 nautical miles away at sea. This recognizable pattern helps sailors identify the tower in darkness and navigate safely into the harbor.
