Church of St. John of Jerusalem Outside the Walls, Romanesque church in Śródka district, Poznań, Poland

The Church of St. John of Jerusalem Outside the Walls is a Romanesque building with a single nave, ribbed vaulting, and buttressed brick walls. The western portal displays stone Romanesque architectural elements and ranks among the oldest preserved churches in Poznań.

This structure was built around the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries as a house of worship for the Knights Hospitaller, a military-religious order. It stands as the oldest surviving church building in Poznań and marks the early presence of this order in the city.

The interior holds a Late Gothic triptych from the early 16th century showing Mary with the Infant, John the Baptist, and St Stanislaus. This artwork reflects the spiritual importance this place held for believers across centuries.

Access to the church is normally possible about 30 minutes before the daily services held in the morning and evening. It is advisable to check the exact opening times beforehand, as this remains an active place of worship.

Beneath the Baroque chapel lies a crypt holding the remains of several Hospitaller commanders, including the chapel's founder. This hidden history underground reveals how significant this order was to the city.
