Church of St. John of Jerusalem Outside the Walls, Romanesque church in Śródka district, Poznań, Poland

The Church of St. John of Jerusalem Outside the Walls is a Romanesque brick church with a single nave, ribbed vaulting, and buttressed walls, located within the city of Poznań. Its western portal is made of stone and features Romanesque decorative details that define the overall character of the building.

The church was built around the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries as a place of worship for the Knights Hospitaller. It is the oldest surviving church building in Poznań and marks the early presence of this military-religious order in the region.

Inside, a Late Gothic triptych from the early 16th century shows Mary with the Infant, John the Baptist, and St. Stanislaus. The painting is kept in a side area and draws the attention of visitors who still come here for regular worship today.

Entry is generally possible around 30 minutes before the daily services held in the morning and evening. Since this is an active place of worship, it is worth checking the current opening hours before your visit.

Beneath the Baroque chapel lies a crypt holding the remains of several Hospitaller commanders, including the chapel's own founder. This space below the church floor shows how deeply rooted the order was in the life of the city over many centuries.
