Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Baroque church in Old Town, Kraków, Poland
The Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Baroque church on Karmelicka Street in central Kraków, featuring a two-tower facade inspired by Rome's Il Gesù. Inside, the space is filled with carved altars, painted vaults, and ornate details typical of the style.
The church was founded at the end of the 14th century under the patronage of Queen Jadwiga and King Władysław Jagiełło. Over the following centuries it was enlarged and given its current Baroque form.
The main altar inside the church features one of the largest Baroque wood carvings in Kraków, depicting the Virgin Mary visiting Saint Elizabeth. The craftsmanship draws many visitors who come specifically to see religious art up close.
The church is on Karmelicka Street, within easy walking distance from Kraków's Old Town. Regular religious services and occasional organ concerts mean the visit can feel different depending on when you arrive.
A stone set into the outer wall on Garbarska Street is said to carry the footprint of Queen Jadwiga, left during the original construction. Very few visitors notice it, even though it sits in plain sight at street level.
