Rędziński Bridge

Rędziński Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Wrocław, Poland

Description

Rędziński Bridge is a cable-stayed crossing in Wrocław, Poland, supported by a single central tower that rises 122 meters above the river surface. The roadway hangs from 160 steel cables that fan out across a total span of 1742 meters, passing over both the main Odra channel and the waterways around Rędzin Island.

History

Construction started in 2008 as part of the A8 motorway loop around the city, with the roadway opening to vehicles in August 2011. A major flood struck the area in 2010 while work was ongoing, but the partially completed structure withstood the high water without serious damage.

Culture

Local residents call the structure simply by its neighborhood name, which refers to Rędzin Island lying beneath the span. The voting process that named the crossing reflected how people in the city wanted a reference tied directly to the geography rather than a historical figure.

Practical

The crossing carries three lanes in each direction and links the northern districts of Wrocław to the A8 motorway network. Pedestrians and cyclists use separate pathways along the outer edges of the roadway, which offer open views across the river.

Did you know?

The concrete deck covers 70,000 square meters, making it the largest reinforced concrete surface on any bridge worldwide. The total length of wire inside the suspension cables would be enough to reach from Wrocław all the way to Tokyo.
