Tumski Bridge, Steel footbridge in Wrocław, Poland.
Tumski Bridge is a steel footbridge in Wrocław that crosses the Odra River using a double-span steel structure. It connects the mainland to Wyspa Piasek and serves only foot traffic.
Built in 1889, it replaced an older wooden bridge that previously spanned the river. Its construction marked the territorial boundary between civic authority on Wyspa Piasek and religious governance on Ostrów Tumski.
Two sandstone figures created by Gustaw Grunenberg in 1893 stand at each end, depicting Saint Hedwig and Saint John the Baptist. These statues define the crossing's character and reflect the spiritual role this passage has held.
The bridge allows only foot traffic and has weight restrictions that prevent vehicles from crossing. Heavy loads and motor traffic are not permitted on the structure.
The original hand-lit gas lamps from when the bridge was built still function and are lit manually each evening. This heritage lighting system creates a distinctive nighttime glow along the crossing.
