Saints Cyril and Methodius church in Wrocław, Eastern Orthodox church on Wyspa Piasek, Wrocław, Poland.
Saints Cyril and Methodius church is a brick building displaying Baroque features, located on Wyspa Piasek island and accessed via footbridges crossing the Oder River. The exterior shows typical Baroque proportions with restrained but elegant details typical of the period.
The building was originally constructed in 1686 for Augustinian nuns and passed through several religious communities before becoming the first post-war Orthodox church in Wrocław in 1976. This conversion marked the return of Orthodox worship to the city after decades of absence.
The church vestibule contains an exhibition detailing the missionary work of Saints Cyril and Methodius among Slavic populations of Eastern Europe.
The location is on a small island and is reached on foot by crossing several bridges, so wear comfortable shoes and allow time for the walk. Inside you will find Orthodox literature and religious objects in various languages that provide insight into the tradition.
During World War II, the building housed approximately 500,000 books from the University of Breslau library, but these were destroyed in the 1945 fire. The ruins stood abandoned for decades before the church was restored and eventually reopened for worship.
