Wilanów Cemetery, Roman Catholic cemetery in Wilanów district, Poland
Wilanów Cemetery is a burial ground in the Wilanów district of Warsaw, extending along Wiertnicza and Wilanowska streets. A neo-Gothic chapel-mausoleum and ceramic fence designed by architect Henryk Marconi are distinctive features of the site.
The cemetery was founded in 1816 by Stanisław Kostka Potocki with an original circular design. Around 1860, it underwent major expansion and was reshaped into a Greek cross layout.
The cemetery serves as a place of remembrance for notable Polish figures, including composers, poets, and members of military regiments. The gravestones and monuments reflect the importance of these individuals in Polish cultural life.
The cemetery is open to visitors and maintained by the Parish of Saint Anne, allowing people to walk among the monuments and learn about Polish history. The site is well-kept and serves as a quiet space for reflection amid the urban setting.
The grounds hold mass graves of soldiers from various conflicts, including fighters from the January Uprising of 1863 and casualties from World War II. These burial sites stand as solemn reminders of turbulent periods in Polish history.
