Bastion Colomb, Military fortification in Poznań, Poland
Bastion Colomb is a military fortification in Poznań that encompasses a three-story blockhouse within Marcinkowski Park and preserved wall sections along Aleja Niepodległości street. The structure comprises a brick building with tunnels beneath, positioned at a significant intersection in the city's central district.
The structure was constructed around 1854 as part of the polygonal Poznań Fortress system designed by architect Karl von Grolman during the Prussian control period. This fortification was built when the city needed defensive structures to protect against external threats and territorial challenges.
The blockhouse shapes the appearance of Marcinkowski Park with its massive brick structure and visible gun emplacements that immediately convey its former military purpose. Today visitors encounter it as a landmark within the green space, while its remaining walls line Aleja Niepodległości street and define the park's character.
Visitors can explore the lower level which operates as a pub today, while the underground tunnels serve water management functions. It is wise to verify opening hours beforehand as access may be limited and not all sections are available to visitors.
The earthen rampart survived bombing during World War II and remained well preserved despite the street that was later cut through the site. This continuity of the physical structure makes it a rare surviving example of such fortifications within the modern city.
