Virgin Tower in Szczecin, Medieval fortified tower in Szczecin, Poland
The Virgin Tower in Szczecin is a medieval defensive structure with a circular floor plan and thick stone walls standing in the northeastern part of the Old Town. The building has deep arrow slits, a crenellated fighting platform, and a pointed spire crowning its top.
The tower was built around 1400 as part of the city's defensive system and guarded the Maiden Gate at the medieval wall. It is the last surviving fortification of its kind in Szczecin, as other defensive structures were demolished after 1720.
The tower takes its name from the maidens who once inhabited this harbor quarter area, and it still shows traces of its defensive role along the city wall. Visitors can see the thick walls and narrow arrow slits that reveal the practical side of medieval city defense.
The building stands on Panieńska Street 47 near the harbor and can be easily viewed from the outside without difficulty. To visit the chambers inside, visitors should contact the property owners in advance since access times are limited.
The tower also goes by the nickname Tower of Seven Coats because its walls were reworked multiple times in earlier periods. This layering of building materials from different eras is still visible today when you look closely at the stone courses.
