Domki Profesorskie w Szczecinie, Historic building complex in central Szczecin, Poland.
The Domki Profesorskie is a residential complex in central Szczecin made up of several individual buildings spanning different periods. The ensemble combines medieval cellars with Gothic ribbed vaults and later additions, now serving restaurants, offices, and homes.
The complex began as homes for canons of a collegiate church but was later converted to house professors of a teaching institution. Major transformations occurred in 1739 when the Prussian king Frederick William I ordered significant renovations.
These houses show how scholars lived and worked in Szczecin over the centuries. They stand as a record of academic life in the city, housing educators after the Reformation transformed religious institutions into educational centers.
The ensemble sits centrally at Plac Żołnierza Polskiego and Mariacka Street, making it easy to locate. The exteriors are viewable from outside, while the impressive Gothic cellars are partly accessible as dining venues today.
The medieval cellars beneath the houses preserve 15th-century Gothic vaults with intricate details that often go unseen. Many visitors notice these ancient spaces only upon entering the restaurants and establishments housed in the depths below.
