Velthusen Palace in Szczecin, Baroque palace in Szczecin, Poland
Velthusen Palace is a Baroque building in Szczecin with two facades decorated with portrait medallions of composers and philosophers. Both sides also display allegorical representations related to grape harvesting, adding artistic depth to the structure.
A Dutch entrepreneur named G. Christian Velthusen built this palace after 1778 and initially used it for wine storage. The cellars beneath the building held French and Spanish wines from his Green Vault collection.
The building serves as a music school since 1963 and shapes the cultural life of the city. Daily piano sounds and singing echo through its rooms, giving it special meaning for musical education in the region.
The palace is located at the intersection of Staromłyńska and Łaziebna streets near White Eagle Square and is easily accessible. Following extensive renovation work completed in 2015, the building is in excellent condition today and can be visited.
The walls display portrait heads showing not only international composers like Bach and Mozart but also Polish musicians such as Chopin and Szymanowski. This mix of Western European and Polish musical figures was uncommon for the time and reveals the cosmopolitan vision of its builder.
