Statue of Flora in Szczecin, Baroque sculpture at White Eagle Square in Szczecin, Poland.
The Statue of Flora in Szczecin is a Baroque sandstone sculpture depicting the Roman goddess of blooms holding a basket of flowers in her hands. Two decorative putti figures flank the main figure and complete the intricately composed work.
Artist Johann Georg Glume created the statue in 1730 based on designs by Johann Konrad Koch. Following wartime damage, the work underwent thorough restoration in 1953.
The figure depicts the Roman goddess of the season positioned in a public space of the city. It reflects a European practice of displaying mythological characters in urban settings.
The statue stands at White Eagle Square in the Old Town district of Szczecin and is easy to locate. The square is accessible on foot and surrounded by other historical buildings.
The artists carved a horn of plenty into the composition, surrounded by climbing putti that demonstrates handcrafted precision. The detailed carving of these sandstone elements required exceptional technical skill.
