Fort 45 is a pentagon-shaped fortification equipped with eight shelters positioned on its artillery rampart, surrounded by a dry moat and defensive walls built from brick-lined arcades. The structure retains its original 19th-century drainage systems and metal fittings that have survived numerous renovations and adaptations over time.
The fort was constructed between 1884 and 1886 as part of Krakow's defensive system against potential threats from the Russian partition. It formed one of several fortifications built around the city to protect its borders during a period of heightened military concern.
After World War II, a local gardening and beekeeping cooperative used the fort as a storage facility for vegetables, giving it a practical role in community life. This repurposing connected the structure to everyday activities rather than its original military purpose.
The fort is accessible on foot through pathways in the Zielonki area, with the best visiting conditions during warmer months when the site is more comfortable to explore. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for uneven ground and damp spots around the structure.
The fort lacks a traditional neck caponier for gate defense and instead uses a steel sponson that was later repurposed as a decorative element during hotel renovations. This unusual feature reveals how the original military design adapted to serve different civilian purposes over time.
