Nature reserve Hubale, Nature reserve in Zamość County, Lublin Voivodeship, Poland
Nature Reserve Hubale is a 35-hectare protected woodland area located within the buffer zone of Roztocze National Park in eastern Poland. The landscape features mixed forest interspersed with open meadows, crossed by walking paths that allow visitors to explore the terrain.
The reserve was established in 1982 by forestry authorities to protect the habitat of the European ground squirrel. This step represented a broader effort to safeguard this vulnerable species across eastern Poland.
The reserve sits in a landscape shaped by ancient Slavic communities, with burial mounds scattered across the terrain that connect the natural area to its human past. Walking through the site, you can sense the layers of settlement that have unfolded here over centuries.
The site can be explored using designated trails that allow wildlife observation while protecting sensitive habitats from disturbance. The best time to visit is spring and early summer, when animals are more active and the vegetation is in full growth.
After years of local decline, European ground squirrels were reintroduced to the site in 2014 to rebuild the population. This reintroduction effort demonstrates active commitment to restoring the species at this location.
