Sztolnie Kowary

Sztolnie Kowary, Underground uranium mine museum in Kowary, Poland.

Sztolnie Kowary is a former uranium mine now open as a museum, featuring more than 1200 meters of tunnels running through underground chambers. Visitors see mining equipment and mineral collections documenting different extraction periods.

After World War II, the mine supplied uranium ore to the Soviet Union starting in 1945 and ceased this work in 1973. It then became an educational facility for Wroclaw University of Technology.

The site shows how mining shaped life in the region and brought people together over generations. The exhibits tell the story of work underground and daily life for those who labored here.

Visits take place as guided tours lasting about one hour through the underground passages. The route is safely maintained and regularly monitored, so visitors can walk through with confidence.

The site actually combines two separate shafts - Podgórze and Liczyrzepa - together offering Poland's deepest mining access point. This combination makes it unusual to experience different mining depths during a single visit.
