Old Castle in Żywiec, Renaissance castle in Żywiec, Poland
The Old Castle is a Renaissance building in the center of Żywiec, Poland, with symmetrical facades and decorative stonework. It is organized around an inner arcaded courtyard, framed by covered walkways on several levels.
The building dates to the first half of the 15th century and was first recorded in writing in 1467. In the 16th century, the arcaded inner courtyard was added, giving the structure the appearance it has today.
The castle now houses the city museum of Żywiec, where rooms display objects from everyday life in the region. Walking through the exhibition gives a sense of how people in this part of Poland lived over the centuries.
The castle is located in the center of Żywiec and is easy to reach on foot from most parts of town. The inner courtyard is open air, so a visit in good weather makes it easier to take in the arcades.
The arcaded courtyard was commissioned in 1567 by Jan Spytek Komorowski and has changed very little since then. It is considered one of the few surviving examples of Renaissance courtyard design in this part of Poland.
