Szwederowo is a residential quarter in the south of Bydgoszcz, Poland, and one of the most populated parts of the city. It is made up mainly of multi-family housing blocks, and its street layout follows a grid that dates back to the 18th century.
The area took shape during the Swedish occupation in the mid-17th century, when soldiers were stationed on what was then farmland. After 1920, when the commune of Szwederowo merged with Bydgoszcz, the land was gradually built up into the urban quarter it is today.
The name of this quarter comes from the Swedish soldiers who camped here in the 17th century, and locals still use it naturally in everyday speech. Henryk Dąbrowski Park is a popular gathering spot where residents walk, sit, and spend time outdoors.
The quarter is easy to reach from the city center by tram or bus, and most of the area can be covered on foot once you arrive. Shops, schools, and green spaces are spread across the neighborhood, so no single entry point is needed.
The Swedish military engineer Erik Dahlbergh documented this area in the 17th century through detailed sketches, which are among the few surviving visual records of the place before it became a neighborhood. His drawings show open land where streets and buildings stand today.
