Muzeum of Jan Kasprowicz in Villa Harenda, Literary museum in Zakopane, Poland
The Museum of Jan Kasprowicz in Villa Harenda is a wooden house built in the highland architectural style of Zakopane, Poland. It includes living rooms, an attic floor, a dining room, and gallery areas displaying works from the family's art collection.
The house was built in 1920 as a guesthouse and came into the hands of the poet Jan Kasprowicz in 1923, who lived there until his death. A granite mausoleum was built near the house shortly after he died.
The name Villa Harenda comes from the nearby Harenda Mountain, at whose foot the house sits. The rooms still hold personal objects belonging to the poet and his wife, arranged as they were during the couple's lifetime.
The museum can only be visited on guided tours that cover both the house and the mausoleum. As visitor numbers are limited at any one time, it is worth checking opening times before you go.
The mausoleum was only completed several years after the poet's death, which was an unusually long time for such a monument. It honors both the poet and his wife on equal terms, without placing either figure above the other.
