Church of St. John the Evangelist in Zakopane

St. John the Evangelist Church is a wooden chapel in Zakopane with covered cloisters surrounding its perimeter. Decorated domed towers and traditional wooden ornaments define the entire building.

The chapel was built between 1710 and 1720 in the nearby village of Zakrzów. It was transported by train and reconstructed in Zakopane during 1947 and 1948.

The interior showcases mountain region religious art with painted glass windows and carved wooden Apostle figures. Visitors see traditional votive offerings left by worshippers that give the space a personal character.

The building sits on Harenda Street and is easily reached on foot. Regular worship services take place, so visitors should check ahead to see when the church is open to tourists.

The barrel vault of the chancel features an Italian-style painting of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary surrounded by numerous angels. This artistic choice stands out from local wooden carving traditions and makes the interior memorable.
