Zamczysko, Archaeological site in northern Bydgoszcz, Poland.
Zamczysko is an ancient settlement in Bydgoszcz positioned on a raised landform above the Vistula River and surrounded by steep slopes and defensive earthworks. Excavations revealed building foundations and extensive fortification systems that document both periods of occupation.
The settlement was first established by Lusatian cultures and later rebuilt and reoccupied by early medieval communities. Between the 6th and 10th centuries, the site experienced destruction and reconstruction multiple times.
Two different peoples occupied this place over separate periods, leaving behind distinct traces of their daily lives and survival strategies. The objects found here reveal how inhabitants adapted their settlement to changing threats and circumstances.
The site is easy to reach from Bydgoszcz and located near a major road, with room to walk around and explore the terrain. Wear sturdy footwear since the ground is uneven and slopes can be steep in places.
Archaeologists discovered two separate ash layers in a moat, showing that the settlement was rebuilt after major fires. These traces suggest that people here had to start over multiple times but kept returning to the site.
