Zawkrze, Administrative region in northern Mazovia, Poland
Zawkrze is a historical administrative region in northern Mazovia, Poland, covering parts of several counties across two voivodeships. It lies between the Wkra and Działdówka rivers, and its main urban center is Mława, with Szreńsk serving as the traditional administrative seat.
In 1494, under King John I Albert, the area became part of Płock Voivodeship and was divided into three counties: Szreńsk, Mława, and Niedzbórz. That structure held for a long time and left a lasting mark on how the region developed and was governed.
The Museum of the Zawkrze Region in Mława displays craft objects and farming tools that shaped daily life between the Wkra and Działdówka rivers. A visit there gives a concrete sense of the rural traditions that still mark the character of the area.
A car is the most practical way to get around, as towns and villages are connected by rural roads and distances can add up quickly. Planning ahead and allowing extra travel time between stops makes the visit much smoother.
