The nature complex "Szopienice-Borki", Nature reserve in Sosnowiec, Poland.
The nature complex Szopienice-Borki is a wetland in Sosnowiec, made up of three connected ponds surrounded by reeds, trees, and open grassy areas. Paths run along the shorelines and link the different sections of the site, offering varied views across the water and surrounding vegetation.
The site was formed from sand extraction pits left behind in the 1960s that gradually filled with water and created a new landscape. In 2000, the area received official protection to safeguard the wildlife that had established itself there.
The ponds and paths are used throughout the year by locals for walks, cycling, and family outings. On warm evenings, the shore of Morawa pond in particular draws people from the surrounding neighborhoods.
The paths are well maintained and largely flat, making the area accessible for visitors of all ages. Morawa pond has a swimming area and water sports options, so a visit during the warmer months tends to offer the most to do.
The area was not a natural habitat to begin with but formed entirely from industrial activity, yet it now supports large numbers of water birds and gulls. Their calls can be heard well before the water comes into view, which gives the site an unexpected quality for an urban setting.
