Red Town Hall, Gothic Revival town hall in Szczecin, Poland.
Red Town Hall is a Gothic Revival town hall in Szczecin, Poland, built in red brick and decorated with pointed arches, bay windows, slender towers, and ceramic coats of arms. It stands near Stefana Batorego Square and now serves as the headquarters of the Maritime Office.
The building was constructed between 1875 and 1879 under architect Karl Kruhl to meet the city's growing administrative needs. It replaced an earlier town hall that had become too small as the city expanded.
The four figures at the entrance represent craftsmanship, fishing, trade, and science, showing what mattered most to the city during the 1800s. Looking closely at them gives a sense of how the community saw itself at the time.
The building operates as a government office, so visits are limited to viewing the exterior. The red brick facade and ceramic details are best seen during the day when the light is good.
Two ceramic Swedish lions hold a crown above the Szczecin coat of arms on the facade, a detail that points to the city's period under Swedish rule. This small element is easy to miss but tells a lot about the layers of foreign influence that shaped this part of Poland.
