Harbour Gate in Szczecin, Baroque city gate in Szczecin, Poland
The Harbour Gate is a Baroque city gate made of brick with ornate sandstone features, including sculptures and oval medallions displaying royal monograms. The building now houses the Szczecin Chamber Theatre, offering performances in an intimate space for around 80 spectators.
King Frederick William I of Prussia commissioned this fortified gate in 1724, assigning its design to architect Gerhard Cornelius von Wallrave. It was built as part of the city's fortification efforts during that period.
The gate displays Latin inscriptions and symbolic figures, including the deity of the Oder River, overseeing relief scenes of the city. These elements tell stories about the city's connection to the river and royal authority.
The site is centrally located in the city and easily accessible on foot, with clear signage and level access to the entrance. Visitors can admire the facade at any time, while theatrical performances are scheduled at specific times.
The gate's crown displays the Prussian coat of arms with a royal crown, while each facade shows different artistic compositions. Each side tells its own visual story through distinct design elements.
