The school was founded in 1945 following the end of World War II and has occupied its current building since then, which dates to 1904. The structure previously served as the St. Peter's Real School, commonly known as Petrichule.

The school bears the name of astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus and displays representations of his scientific work in the main hall. Visitors can learn about his legacy and influence on science through these dedicated exhibits.
