Hala Baildon, Sports hall in Katowice, Poland
Hala Baildon was a sports hall in Katowice featuring a distinctive cable-supported roof system with approximately 50 steel cables spanning across the interior at Chorzowska Street. The building contained training facilities, spectator seating for about 1,500 people, and served as a sports center for the Baildon Steelworks Vocational School.
The hall opened on September 3, 1969, and became a central point along the route between Chorzow and Katowice. It stood for more than 30 years before its demolition in 2003, serving the region during the Cold War and the decades that followed.
The venue hosted national table tennis championships and music festivals like Metalmania that drew crowds from across the region. These events made the hall a gathering place where sports enthusiasts and music fans from the surrounding area came together regularly.
The site was easily accessible from the main route connecting the two cities. Visitors should note that the hall was demolished in 2003 and no longer exists, so it can only be visited as a historical location or through local records and documentation.
In 1981, the hall hosted the First General Assembly of Delegates of the Katowice Province Solidarity movement during a critical moment in Polish history. This gathering marked an important step in the struggle against communist rule in the region.
