Nietoperzowa Cave, Cave system in Jerzmanowice, Poland
Nietoperzowa Cave is a cave system in Jerzmanowice that extends 306 meters through limestone formations with multiple halls connected by corridors. The walls and ceilings throughout display mineral deposits that visitors can observe while moving through the different chambers.
The cave took shape through natural limestone dissolution and shows traces of early human habitation in prehistoric times. Excavations revealed remains from cave bears and evidence of settlement from these distant periods.
The cave earned attention in Polish cinema when director Jerzy Hoffman selected it as a filming location for the historical movie With Fire and Sword. Visitors can recognize scenes from the film when walking through the chambers today.
The cave maintains a constant cool temperature regardless of the season, so visitors should bring warm clothing whatever the weather outside. Walking through the passages requires sturdy footwear and reasonable fitness due to the uneven ground and varied terrain.
The cave is home to populations of Meta menardi spiders, which are notably venomous among spider species in the region. These creatures have adapted perfectly to the dark underground environment and inhabit the chambers throughout the year.
