Kaszownik, Medieval water reservoir in Mokre district, Toruń, Poland.
Kaszownik is a large artificial pond with stone embankments located near the historic center of Torun. The water system is regulated through locks at its western end and serves as storage for the city's defensive moats and industrial operations.
The Teutonic Knights built this water reservoir in the 14th century after redirecting the Torun Stream through an artificial channel to the city. The structure remained a key part of the city's infrastructure for hundreds of years afterward.
The reservoir supported numerous water-powered workshops, including mills, dyeing facilities, and fulling mills that shaped the industrial heritage of the city. These craftspeople relied on steady water flow to operate their equipment and conduct their daily work.
The location is most accessible from the western end where the locks are situated and water management is visible. Walking around the pond provides different views of the structure and gives a sense of how it connects to the surrounding city.
The reservoir was originally divided into upper and lower sections. The smaller upper pond was filled in during the 1970s to make room for street expansion.
