Church of Saint Mary of the Assumption in Żukowo

The Church of Saint Mary of the Assumption is a brick structure featuring pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and distinctive Gothic elements throughout its design. It serves as the central point of a monastic complex built in this region of northern Poland.

Duke Mestwin I of Pomerania founded this monastic complex in 1209 for the Premonstratensian order, establishing a major religious presence in northern Poland. The site remained a significant place of worship and spiritual life for centuries that followed.

The monastery linked to this church became known for teaching Kashubian embroidery to noble daughters, who learned to work with silver and gold threads under the guidance of nuns.

The building survived German occupation during World War II and contains graves of prisoners from Stutthof concentration camp. This connection links religious heritage directly to a tragic chapter of the region's past.
