Church of Saint James the Greater, Gothic church in New Town, Toruń, Poland

The Church of Saint James the Greater is a brick structure built in Gothic style that rises prominently in Toruń's New Town district. The building features a tall tower and multiple side aisles that support the main vault system characteristic of this architectural period.

Construction began in 1309 when a bishop laid the foundation stone for this medieval structure. Over the centuries, the building underwent several modifications, with artistic elements like a Renaissance organ added during later periods.

The church contains wall paintings and sculptures from different periods that reflect religious artistic traditions. These artworks tell of the artistic values held by communities who worshipped here across the centuries.

The building is visible from outside at any time, but the interior is accessible only during specific hours. It's helpful to check opening times before visiting, as these vary by season and special events.

The main nave vault is supported through an unusual weight distribution system that transfers pressure to the buttresses of the side aisles, allowing greater flexibility in the interior layout. This technical feature was an advanced solution for Gothic architecture at the time.
