Krokiew, Mountain summit in Tatra Mountains, Poland.
Krokiew is a mountain summit in the Tatra range, rising directly above the town of Zakopane in southern Poland, with open views over the surrounding valleys and ridges. A large ski jumping facility occupies a prominent part of its slope, giving the mountain a very recognizable silhouette when seen from the town below.
A ski jumping hill was built on the slope in 1925, turning Krokiew into a venue for international competitions relatively soon after Zakopane grew as a winter resort. The facility has been rebuilt and expanded several times since then to meet modern standards.
Krokiew is seen by many as the heart of winter sports around Zakopane, and locals follow competitions here with strong personal attachment. During major events, fans gather on the slope with flags and songs, creating a charged and festive mood that feels deeply rooted in the region.
The mountain is easy to reach on foot from central Zakopane, and several marked trails lead up toward the summit and around the slope. Conditions can change quickly in this part of the Tatras, so checking the weather before heading out is a good habit.
The name Krokiew comes from the Polish word for a rafter or roof beam, most likely referring to the shape of the ridgeline as seen from the valley below. This kind of straightforward naming based on the land's appearance was common in the Tatra region, where shepherds gave mountains names tied to what they saw.
