Adalbert of Prague church in Kalisz, Wooden church in Zawodzie district, Kalisz, Poland
Adalbert of Prague church is a wooden building in Zawodzie with log frame construction and wooden siding, a rectangular nave, and a straight chancel on the northeast side. The structure sits near an archaeological reserve and belongs to Saint Gothard parish.
The wooden church was built in 1798 by carpenter Jan Keiner with funding from Sebastian Zielinski to replace an earlier chapel dating to around 1200. This replacement marked a renewal of worship at the site after centuries of use.
The wooden structure in Zawodzie holds a Baroque altar from the early 1700s and a Romanesque stone font inside, representing layers of religious devotion across different eras. Visitors can see how the community has maintained these artworks through generations.
The church is located at 103 Bolesława Pobożnego Street near an archaeological reserve, making it easy to find in the area. Visitors should know the wooden structure requires careful approach, and the grounds are kept well-maintained by the parish community.
Excavations in 2017 uncovered an 18th-century burial ground beneath the church floor. This discovery confirmed that people have been worshipping and burying their dead at this location long before the current wooden structure was raised.
