Archaeological reserve Zawodzie in Kalisz

The Archaeological reserve Zawodzie is an open-air museum located on a sandy island near the Prosna River, featuring reconstructed medieval buildings and ancient settlement structures. The site displays different building styles and living spaces that represent life in this region across several centuries.

A fortification was established here in the 9th century and grew into a major center of the Piast realm by the 10th century. This early importance made it a place of significant influence for the developing Polish state.

Visitors can experience how people in medieval times actually lived and worked through hands-on activities and demonstrations. The site shows daily routines and crafts that shaped settlement life long ago.

The site is easy to access and suitable for visitors of all ages, with marked paths and information signs at various stations. Comfortable shoes are recommended since visitors often need several hours to explore all areas and exhibitions thoroughly.

The site contains seven wooden houses that were meticulously reconstructed to represent authentic medieval homes where people actually lived. An additional farmhouse from the 18th century was physically moved to this location to illustrate how settlement patterns persisted over time.
